Mostly (not) on McSweeney's!

A blog for my academic ideas, more or less.

Sandwich Sunday, II

Links of note this week!

Themes: design, the archive, magazines, innovation.

The Art of Penguin Science Fiction. Incredible compilation of some brilliant cover art. One of my favourites:

Seven Ways To Be A Graphic Design Student Online. This is, more accurately, a guide to being a better person online — it’s an exposition of seven things I think are important/useful about the internet: Flickr, blogging, Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook, Delicious, and RSS feeds. How to mediate the internet, to make it work for you and to make it more of a personal and rewarding experience.

A compendium of David Foster Wallace’s influences over at HTML giant, where I’m spending more and more time. Blake recommends Renata Adler, “Speedboat”, Richard Brautigan, “In Watermelon Sugar”, and Joan Didion, “Play It As It Is” as starting points.

TV Tropes. “This wiki is a catalog of the tricks of the trade for writing fiction. We dip into the cauldron of story, whistle up a hearty spoonful and splosh it in front of you to devour to your heart’s content.” Very dense! Mind-blowing how much detail there is here, e.g. entry on the ‘Cunning Linguist’ character type.

Immersion Baptism in Vintage Music and Photography 1890-1950. This looks like one NICE book.

More HTML giant; Man Tries To Pay Bill With Spider Drawing.

Chris Ware blows my mind even more than usual. Quimby the Mouse animation for This American Life.

Just got around to reading some of the interviews in the Wag’s Revue. Dave Eggers on the need for more of a distinction between McSweeney’s journal and website. Mark Greif, editor of n+1 (which I still haven’t read in print form) on what magazines do. Haven’t read the Wells Tower yet, or the fiction. MUST READ MORE.

There was more but I’m late for a picnic. Rounders!
